Retired firefighter becomes World Mountain Bike Champion for 12th time
Retired Senior Divisional Officer Paul Daly, father of Watch Commander Paul Daly recently travelled to Nimes in the south of France to represent West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service in the Firefighter World Mountain Bike Championships.
On 8 September, Paul and Ex- Divisional Officer John Cameron both competed against cyclists from around the globe for the illustrious rainbow jersey.
Paul spent 30 years with West Yorkshire Fire Service, starting at Halifax Fire Station in 1973. He also served at Illingworth, Wakefield, Bradford, Todmorden and Sowerby Bridge - to name but a few.
He retired as the service’s senior operations officer based at headquarters.
In this year's competition, avid cyclist Paul beat off the competition and went on to win the rainbow jersey for the twelfth time. He also won combined world champion in the team event, bestowing him with 13 rainbow world champion shirts.
Paul won the race for the first time back in 2000 and continued to win for the next six consecutive years.
If that wasn't enough, back in April (2017) he won the World Masters Mountain Bike Championship in New Zealand, where he now lives. The picture is at the summit of the famous tour de France mountain route, ‘Mont Ventoux’ that Paul (pictured right) and John Cameron (left) both cycled after the event. No mean feat especially with John being is his 70’s!
Amazing stuff!
