Update from the Chair:
Welcome to 2024. I know for many, January can be a tough month as we all recover from a busy period in December. I find that developing some new goals and a fresh focus on things can help provide some clarity and motivation. It is usually the time to dust off your goals to eat more healthily, do more exercise and improve your fitness – I always feel this way in January and as Chair of FireSport UK I feel we should all be aware of the range of activities that people across the UK fire sector can get involved in and benefit from.
I was so pleased to take up the role of Chair of FSUK toward the end of 2023 and want to thank Chris Lowther, the previous Chair for his work prior to me taking up this post. Having now met and discussed the work of FSUK with the Executive team, we have lots of plans for 2024.
I was pleased to present an update paper to the National Fire Chief’s Council in November 2023. I specifically requested all CFOs to return to their respective services and remind their teams about FSUK and to encourage more people to get involved. I also extended an invite for NFCC to become members of FSUK so that all NFCC staff can benefit from membership. I also had a productive conversation earlier this month with Jill Tolfrey, the CEO of the Firefighter’s Charity and we intend to support one another moving forwards.
In terms of subscriptions and funding, I was pleased to receive an update from Paul Drakes, the FSUK Treasurer, that all services had contributed their annual membership fees and FSUK has stability from a financial perspective. The governance arrangements of FSUK will be reviewed this year to hopefully simplify what has historically been quite a complex structure. We intend to invite new Members onto the Executive to represent a range of organisations across the UK FRS sector in addition to asking all active sections to refresh their committee structures and update the contact information they have on the FSUK webpage. We have also agreed as an Executive to launch a specific FSUK Code of Conduct. The spotlight that has been on culture across the whole FRS sector in the last 12 – 18 months has revealed a real need for conduct and behaviours to be front and centre of everything we do. I feel this should extend to sport and leisure activities that are endorsed and supported through FSUK. This new Code of Conduct is available on our website and we will be asking all active sections to bring this to the attention of your members during 2024.
I am looking forward to seeing a full calendar of events across all sections throughout this year in what I hope will see a strong resurgence in engagement across all activities within FSUK.

This site will provide details of how to enter the events, what the results were or how to contact the key organisers if you have any queries. In many ways the site is actually your site - the past and present members of the British Fire and Rescue Service, for if you have taken part in an event or intend to organise one, contact the Section Secretaries with any comments, details, reviews or pictures and they can be 'uploaded' for all to share.
It is within your power to be a part of the evolution of this website and we all look forward to your active participation.
